Meet the Instructors:

John Walker 

John is President of ManageMen, Inc. and the founder of Janitor University. He has over 30 years of experience in the cleaning industry. John specializes in (OS1) functional management, training, workloading, strategic long-range planning, and organizational change issues. He was the first Director of Education for the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA). He worked there on a consulting basis from 1988 to 1992. John is currently the author of ISSA’s best selling 540 Cleaning Times, which is the accepted industry standard reference book for workloading. He also authored ISSA’s E.Z. Trainer Workbook and 14 Basic Cleaning Procedures. In 1992, John produced the cleaning industry’s first Telly Award winning video: Carpet Care 101. Since then, several of the staple (OS1) training videos have also won Telly Awards.

In 1991, John introduced the Jan/San Industry’s first universal cleaning operating system, known as (OS1). This operating system was developed to install cleaning programs that only used processes and products that “cause the buildings to be clean.” In 1993, John founded Janitor University which offers a combination of hands-on training for key industry executives. In 2006, the Janitor University curriculum expanded to include the annual in-service classes known as (OS1) Expert Trainer and (OS1) Coach class.

John is the recipient of numerous research grants in the field of cleaning management and training. He speaks and presents training programs in the United States and Internationally. John is widely known for his enthusiasm and energetic training style. John is an industry expert and the author of a variety of books on professional cleaning, numerous pamphlets, training booklets and articles.

In 2002, John was inducted into the Cleaning Management Institute Hall of Fame.

Dominic Bratta

Spending his entire career in the public sector, Bratta most recently worked as team lead overseeing the implementation of a new cleaning program in hundreds of facilities across the US. Starting in 2009, Bratta helped develop and implement a new engineered, scientific cleaning process based on team cleaning principles, successfully negotiating several agreements with one of the country’s largest unions to allow for the program’s implementation.

“Dominic possesses a unique skillset and knowledge base that will provide invaluable resource to the organizations we serve,” said John Walker, President. “He not only understands the science behind cleaning, but he’s a skilled arbitrator and knows what it takes to implement change in organizations of all sizes. We’re thrilled to have him join our team.”

 Darrel Hicks

Darrel Hicks is the author of Wiley Publishing’s “Infection Control For Dummies”, and is nationally recognized as one of the top experts in infection control. Currently, Darrel provides support and leadership to the 100+ staff members of the Environmental Services and Patient Transportation Departments of a major metropolitan hospital. The campus includes a 500-bed hospital and six medical office buildings and totals 1.2 million sq. ft.

Darrel started his career in the management of housekeeping services in 1981. He has worked in hospitals ranging in size from 20-500 beds, and knows what it takes to plan, set goals and provide guidance and consultation to the management team and department(s) staff. He has managed as many as 13 departments and 170 F.T.E.’s at one time in a 3-hospital system. In that healthcare system Darrel had to pioneer and discover ways to save money by cross training staff, job sharing, controlling overtime and putting a system of controls in place.

Darrel Hicks is also the immediate Past President of the IEHA (International Executive Housekeepers Association) and holds the title of Registered Executive Housekeeper (REH) through this organization of over 3,500 members.

Darrel is an active member in ASHES (American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services) and holds the designation of CHESP (Certified Healthcare Environmental Services Professional) through that great organization as well.


Ben Walker

Ben Walker is the primary instructor for Janitor University. He is a monthly columnist for Facility Cleaning Decisions Magazine and the author of the best-selling 612 Cleaning Times.

He has performed cleaning audits and developed transition planning for operations of all sizes: in-house, contractors, healthcare, colleges and universities, K-12 schools, federal government facilities and property management companies.
